With the aim of promoting reading among young people, the Ministry of Culture, through DGLB and in collaboration with the Portuguese Association for the Promotion of Children's and Young People's Literature, awards the National Book Illustration Prize.

This is intended to encourage artists working in the field of book illustration in Portugal, especially children's books.

The prize, which has been awarded every year since 1996, distinguishes an illustrator for a set of original illustrations published as part of a book for children or young people, published from 1st January to 31st December of the preceding year. The competition may be entered by publishing houses (or equivalent) based in mainland Portugal, or Portuguese or foreign illustrators resident in Portugal. The prize is worth five thousand euros, together with a further 1500 euros to pay for the prize-winner's trip to the International Children's and Young People's Books Fair in Bologna, Italy.
Runners-up selected for special mention are also awarded 1500 euros, which is intended to be a contribution to the cost of their presence in the Bologna Fair.
