In 1998, IPLB signed a Protocol with the Ministry of Justice (through the Directorate-General for Prison Services) aimed at extending the National Reading Promotion Programme to prisons.
Several initiatives have been developed as part of this agreement:

  • Purchase and donation of books for prison libraries;
  • Programmes to raise awareness of the importance of books and reading;
  • Encounters with texts and their authors (weekly or fortnightly sessions over a period of three or four months);
  • Reading and writing competitions.
