 Five major projects are underway:

  • Support for Writing and Publishing promotes all forms of literary production by supporting publication, prizes and the bodies who are developing the area. It also produces and spreads information on publishers and bookshops.
  • The National Reading Promotion Programme aims to reduce illiteracy and create new reading publics through its own projects or in partnership with other schemes and bodies; for example, the National Reading Plan, Public Libraries, and the Portuguese Prison Service.
  • The Dissemination of Portuguese Writers Abroad project aims to make Portuguese writers and their work better known outside Portugal. As well as running three programmes (Support for Translation, Support for Publication in Brazil and Support for Illustration and Comic Books), it assists writers going to international book fairs, literary festivals and taking up residencies. The DGLB also participates at the major international book fairs.
  •  The Portuguese-Language Bibliographic Network is the promotional programme for books and reading in Portuguese-speaking countries. The Network operates in partnership with national bodies such as the Portuguese Development Support Institute, the Camões Institute and Town and City Halls; as well as African libraries and archives, in order to take full advantage of the various skills and facilities available.
  •  The Documentation Centre on Portuguese Writers produces and provides access to information on Portuguese writers, systematically updating the largest existing database.
